Earlier this summer CMS released performance feedback for clinicians that participated in MIPS during 2017 performance period. This included an overview of their MIPS final score, performance category details and 2019 MIPS payment adjustment.
A process called targeted review was also offered to clinicians, groups or those participating in certain APMs, to request a review of their MIPS payment adjustment factor(s), if they believe there was an error with the payment adjustment calculation.
After reviewing the initial targeted review requests, CMS noticed issues that required them to revise the scoring logic and re-issue 2017 MIPS scores. The following were the prevailing concerns:
-
The application of the 2017 Advancing Care Information and Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances hardship exceptions.
-
The awarding of Improvement Activity credit for successful participation in the Improvement Activities Burden Reduction Study.
-
The incorrect attribution of the All-Cause Readmission (ACR) measure to certain physicians and group practices MIPS final score
Addressing and correcting the above concerns resulted in changes to the 2017 final score and associated 2019 payment adjustment for the clinicians that were impacted by these issues.
CMS has extended the target review deadline to October 15, 2018 at 8:00pm (EDT), to offer clinicians, groups and APM entities additional time to review their performance feedback.
